Leafs really loaded up for tonight's game.  4 of their top-6 forwards, and 3 of their top-4 defensemen.

Yeah and it looked like it too. Not a great period by Montreal at all.

Hutson had some flashes and made some really nice passes. Unfortunately the recipients of those passes seemed shocked and weren’t ready for the pass.

Saturday the Habs should have their big lineup

Dvorak ties the game ... trade him while he's hot (LOL)

I think at this point I would play Struble over Xhekaj on the left side. I think Struble is the better player.

Struble has definitely looked good but it's also a very small sample size.

I am a Xhekaj fan but he looked crappy at times.

He is a third-pairing defenceman I-M-O ... when he gets over 15 minutes 5-on-5 it may be asking a bit much.

I think 3rd pairing is his floor and I also think he is the perfect 3rd pairing defensemen who can play up on occasion. In this pretty talented group of young defensemen I don't see him being top 4. I think Engstrom is a wild card here. He had a bad mistake tonight (obviously) but he is a wonderful skater. Need to see more of him.

I havent seen a lot of Dobes and he looked good, as did Hutson.

I'm bummed Kappy didnt dominate - I want to see him on the team ASAP.  He's ready, make a spot for him.  Speaking of which, way to raise your trade value Dvo!

Interestingly enough, ABB hasn't looked bad.  I wasn't sure what to expect from him but a goalie on his former said he has a top 6 level shot.   I'm intrigued and want to see more of him.

Nobody has said this yet, but I thought Armia played a really good game.  ex:  numerous times he recovered lose pucks and kept it in the Leafs zone along the boards by using his body, reach, strength and positioning.  The Habs had numerous prolonged opportunities because of it.

If Dobes can replicate that a bunch of times… I’ll get excited. Competed really well. Big goalie. See how he does in Laval this year. Was not thinking goaltending was our best position nor did I think we had depth at the position, but this preseason has made me feel much, much better about it. The game could have been ugly without him.

Kapanen started off great but slowed to average. Contrary to other opinions I did not think Dvorak outshone Kapanen, but Dvorak played well enough to keep his status. I’ll be excited to see how management decides on Kapanen. I hope Kapanen stays.

Barron in my opinion isn’t solidifying his position on the team with his play. The door is open for him to lose his spot.

Hutson was good. There is no way he isn’t on this team to begin the year.

Tuch impressed me. Hope he can do more of the same if he’s brought up for some games.

Beck was good. He is going to be a useful player when he stays with team permanently…

Roy was quiet tonight.

Reinbacher was average. Time in minors will do him good.

Enjoyed watching the game though painful at times. Dobes and Hutson were highlights. Newhook and Tuch stood out too.

Looking forward to Saturday.

i hope Domi gets what’s coming to him ….

It was interesting to me to watch Kapanen and Beck because they are both touted as future third line centres.

Beck seems to be a more complete player that is definitely defensively oriented.

Kapanen is much more dynamic and offensively minded.

Engstrom looked exceptionally strong carrying the puck. He needs more time to hone his game but he might be an impact player for us at some point.

Hutson was the best player and I can’t see a world where he doesn’t make the team.

Kapanen was playing on a much weaker team against NHL-level talent in his second ever game in North America.  I don't think him dominating was ever going to be an option.  I suspect the coaching staff wanted to see that he could keep up, hold his own defensively, and make a couple of plays offensively being on the second line.  I think he checked all those boxes.  I don't know if he necessarily helped his cause for making the team but he didn't hurt it either.  Given last night's lineup, that's a win for him.

You don’t think he is ready? He has been impressive for a year.

No spot for him and the role he has back home would be better as a development year.

Thought Barron looked as he had in the past, not great.

I get your line of thinking and another year developing certainly wouldn’t hurt.

I am questioning whether Kapanen is an upgrade on Dvorak and I think it’s pretty close.

Yes on Barron, he looked exactly the same as last season. I’m not sure he has enough to stick with the team. Perhaps a year under St. Louis will do wonders for him but I don’t think Barron has the hockey IQ - he doesn’t read the play very well.

It is pro hockey, and organizational politics come into play always. With that said, the management owes it to the team and players to make room for a player who is clearly better. Don't forget, players know who are the better players. Of course , I'm not talking about the future or potential of a player. In the moment, players know who is who.

If Kapanen is clearly deserving, Hughes will make room for him. Dvorak just isn't reliable at this point to stay healthy, and if Kapanen proves to merit his inclusion. DVO could find himself in Armia territory of LY. Also, Hughes and MSL will afford Dvo every opportunity to prove he is over his health concerns and can stay in the line up for more than 30 games.

My guess is.

-Barron will make the team as the extra Dman so we don't lose him to waivers.

-Struble gets sent down to play top pairing minutes with Reinbacher who also goes down.

-Engstrom to Laval

Math Guhle

Hutson Savard

Xhekaj Mailloux

Barron

* trades still possible to open spots

i think they both might stay up, they play different sides. I think it's a choice between Reinbacher and Mailloux and Reinbacher goes down.

If they keep 8, then yeah Mailloux stays up.

I was assuming 7.

I already had Reinbacher and Engstrom going down.

I have to agree with you on this one.

Struble hasn't done anything deserving of being sent to Laval.

I also agree ... but it isn't because of anything Struble has or hasn't done ... but Mailloux has top 4 potential and needs BIG minutes for a while longer in Laval to bring his defence up to NHL level ... I don't think he can fully show his offensive skills in the NHL until he has confidence that his defence is NHL level ... it would also allow Reinbacher to start as the 2nd (doubt he slips to 3rd) pairing RHD in Laval, making his transition easier.
