Bof, we are all bored.

i am not blind to the shortcomings and gross errors MB made. I just find it annoying when people attack the person as if they were rotten to the core. Professional life is just a small fraction of who anyone of us is.

Fair comment, it seems like MB is the most polarizing topic around here and the summer doldrums don't help much.

Maybe we should just have a forum dedicated to MB like "What do you really think of Marc Bergevin?" as it seems like this topic always creeps into other conversations and we maybe we should just contain to one forum and have at it?

Personally, I think we should just let the convos flow rather than try to regulate them too much - as long as they don’t veer into personal attacks between posters (or, of course, racist/homophobic/misogynist speech etc., which have, mercifully, never been issues here).

Nah, it is fine like this. To me it is just laziness by some posters that instead of thinking a bit to ale a point they just go: “I am right because that imbecile of MB would have done the opposite”

it is what it is

Maybe im missing something but where was Bergevin personally attacked for something outside of hockey?

Not that I recall ... but some see any criticism of their "favs" as being about the person and not the work they did.

Some have called him a piece of sh.t of a human being. Other attribute to him personality flaws without really knowing the person, etc

I usually do not read those comments , I just scroll past them. I was asking what I’ve missed because I would not know what the comment on MB may be.

I am past caring

If anyone called him a "POS human being" then THAT is wrong ... and should be reported/cited/called-out as an unacceptable post ... a "POS GM" would I-M-O be a comment on his performance, not his personal character; as would be, I-M-O even just a "POS" in the context of a discussion of his GM functions/performance.

Similarly, as an example, "his ego wouldn't allow him" to do something is also about him as a GM unless the "something" was unrelated to his job.

And that all applies to any player or management type, not just Marc Bergevin.

I always assume such derogatory comments are in the "hockey" context, not about the individual personally, unless the statement makes it very clear that it is about the individual ... none (I assume) of us know any of these people personally.

It’s a hockey forum. Let’s not dwell on that past

i value de balance in this forum and the quality of member’s posts.
i just want to add that at the time I took it upon myself to make argument for MB to keep that balance in the forum.

This coming season it’s the first I will be comme to g o the HughGort rebuild. The coaching performance, and the prospect development.

Let’s hope our discussion on this forum are up to our combined standard :)

Or people could just discuss whatever they want to past, present, or future of the Habs.  Why limit the topics, especially during the summer where there are no games and little news?

This thread is specifically to discuss the past.

One year later, there's not much left from that return.

Petry (at 50% retention) went for Lindstrom and a 4th with Lindstrom now gone.

DeSmith went for Pearson and a 3rd with Pearson now gone.

Legare went for Durandeau who signed overseas last month.

And the 2nd is still there.

Today, the net gain from the trade was a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for Hoffman, Pitlick, and eating nearly $2M of Petry's contract for two years.

If we can get a couple hundred games out of the players picked with those 3 picks, it's just gravy.  That's not factoring in those pick being traded for a player that we can get games out of.  We already got over 130 games out of Hoffman.

And getting rid of Hoffman's and most of Petry's salary.

Seems decent enough

Yeah, all things considered, it's still a decent return for players who had no standalone trade value in Hoffman/Pitlick.  There's an opportunity cost with having the two-year hit on Petry's retention (what could have happened at the deadline had they had that slot available) but it still feels like a decent net gain in the end.  I was more just pointing out how three of the four pieces the Habs got in that original return are long gone already.

Not Habs related but it fits here.

I remember being absolutely floored when Gretzky got traded but on this day many years ago Wayne Gretzky was traded:

I was 12yrs old and on a family vacation in Greece with my family.

There was obviously no internet or connection to current events on a remote Greek island so I hadn’t heard the news.

We were heading back towards Canada and had a connecting flight from our tiny island to Rhodes before continuing on to Athens.

There was a man sitting at our gate reading a 4 day old copy of USA Today.

A picture of a bleach blond teary eyed Gretzky graced the cover.

Ran to my dad to break the news.

We couldn’t believe it!!

It occurs to me that this EXACTLY the kind of trade fans are always lobbying for in the cap era. “Trade expensive superstar X for a whack of picks and young talent.” As it happens, the trade was a debacle for EDM, although I always kinda felt for Jimmy Carson, a legitimate young star who was thrown into a meat-grinder of fan disappointment through no fault of his own.

I have to admit that the trade a superstar for picks route is what I considered for the leafs.

Trade Mathews for a haul and fix the roster.

Didn't work for Edmonton but it sure worked for Nordiques - although not the same situation.

I don't think this is the type of deal anyone would be wanting. The key in that deal was the money. Otherwise I there would have been a lot more coming back to the oilers. If it wasn't for the money involved, the players from the kings coming back would needed to have been a lot more. And even if LA included Robitaille, they still didn't have enough to make that deal worthwhile.

there are also some players you just don't trade. From that era, a trade could have been made for other  superstars like Yzerman, Jag, or Sakic, where you MAY have been able to get a return that makes it worthwhile The Lindros deal is a perfect example - Quebec was forced to make the deal, but even though cash was a major part of the deal, even without the cash they won that deal. But you don't trade a Gretzky or Lemieux in their PRIME. Lindros was not a Gretzky or Lemieux.

If you look at today's players, the Oilers or Leafs could probably make a deal to move Draisaitl or Matthews and a smart GM could probably get a return that makes it worthwhile. But you are never going to get a return that makes it worthwhile to move McDavid in his prime. Four years from now sure. But not now. Not when he is the best player in the world, and is playing like one of the best players ever.  Montreal could not have won a trade if they moved Lafleur in 1976. But as much as I loved Lafleur - and still love Lafleur - they should have moved him in 1982 or 1983.
