There is also a big difference between 60 points per season, and not an NHL player who has to go to the KHL.

If, and this is an if, he's bought out and becomes a free agent, someone is going to give him what Drouin got, or even more.

I agree, at some point PLD has to start looking in the mirror and realize his chances are running out. Does he really want to play in the KHL?? He might just turn it around in Washington.

Are you sure about that? He's got 7 years left on a $68m contract and has almost $20m earnings in his career already. After July his NMC kicks in for the next 4 years. When he turns 26 this summer, his buyout rate goes to 2/3 and could be on the capital's cap until 2040. I'm thinking he's feeling pretty secure for the next while.

Since he was traded before the NMC kicked in, it is now the capitals option as to whether they will honour the NMC or not.

My comment on Dubois and the KHL was a little tongue in cheek, just trying to make the point that Dubois will run out of options quickly if he doesn't turn it around soon. I am sure that the KHL would be the last option he would explore.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think that particular loophole was closed in the last CBA extension.

I think you are right.

Quote

CBA §11.8 amended to provide that No-Trade and No-Move
clauses shall always travel with the Player in the event of an
Assignment (by Trade or Waivers) of the SPC.

I do wish they would post the revised CBA text.

Both the 2012 CBA and the 202 MOU updating the CBA are  available from the NHLPA website ... the text you quoted above is from row 56 of the MOU ... I don't believe an updated "complete CBA" was ever produced.

It would be very unusual in business to sign an MOU but not subsequently sign a definitive agreement. Of course, this is the NHL, so anything is possible.

I wonder how “Mr. Attitude” and “Mr. Hardass” are going to get along?

I think Mr hardass probably gets fired on another year - two year tops. Isn't that his usual shelf life? We will also find out if there really is an attitude issue or if we made a mistake. I really wanted either Michkov or Leonard.

In maybe three or four years we can look back at the 2023 draft and see who made good picks and who didn't do so well.

I think Hughes said sometime around the 2022 draft that "we don't want pick the best player now, we want to pick the one that will be the best five years from now." Or something similar ...

Looks like the senators got Ullmark:

NHL.com reporting:

Bruins Acquire Mark Kastelic, Joonas Korpisalo (25% retained) and 2024 First-Round Draft Pick (#25)  from Ottawa Senators in Exchange for Linus Ullmark

$64,000 Question is whether an extension has been agreed to ... in principle, as it can't be signed until July 1st.

The Sens should have a deal, or else Ullmark's agent has them over a barrel.  You can't trade for a player and do the extension afterwards without giving all the leverage to the player and overpaying.

Except that the Sens *** COULD *** be desperate to break their 7-yr playoff drought ... they didn't give up a lot in a late first rounder, 25-yr-old 4c(?) and an inconsistent 30 yr-old goalie with 4-yrs left on his contract ... permission to talk contract *** MAY *** not have been given.

Many fans in Ottawa will just be happy to get out from under 3/4 of Korpisalo's contract; perhaps the team as well.

I think the question though will be, how good is Ullmark? and how much was benefiting from a great defensive team?  I mean Ullmark in Buffalo was not the same as Ullmark in Boston.  Did he improve, or was it the team in front of him.  Remember Korpisalo looked great on other teams too.

Good point, I guess we will find out as Ottawa is not nearly as good defensively as Boston. I don't think Ottawa overpaid though so on the surface it looks like a decent deal for Ottawa.

Yeah I have no idea the answer.  Goalies are voodoo.

Sportsnet says:

"According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, there is no extension in place for Ullmark with the Senators as part of the trade."

Guess he plays in Ottawa for 1 year and then we see what happens.

I bet he'll get one but if its not as part of the trade, his agent is gonna get him paid, and a lot.

Given the issues the Sens have had in recent years he may want to see whether he likes the city and the organization/team before committing ... for example, will Michael Andlauer be as good an owner as most assume ... can Staios be a successful NHL GM (one trade doth not a GM make) ... are the young core promising or dysfunctional ... even, what happens with the new arena.

He allegedly told several teams, including Montréal, that he didn't want to play for them so I have no issues with HuGo not drafting him even ***IF*** they did happen to have him rated higher than DR.
